That term was introduced long after Vygotsky's death (1934) by Jerome Bruner in around 1967 to describe the process of carefully chosen levels of support which allow the learner to carry on with a task and which is judiciously reduced as the learner progresses. Wood, Bruner and Ross (1976), introduced the notion of ‘scaffolding’ as a metaphor for the way an expert ‘tutor’ (such as a parent) can support a young child’s progress and achievement through a relatively difficult task.
