It is not often noted, even, that Vygotsky never used the term scaffolding at all. That term was introduced long after Vygotsky's death (1934) by Jerome Bruner in around 1967 to describe the process of carefully chosen levels of support which allow the learner to carry on with a task and which is judiciously reduced as the learner progresses.
